Asian Handicap Betting Explained

Bookmakers in Asia present odds for various markets as an integral part of their betting offer, both on pre-match and live sports betting. Most sports events will have some Asian handicap or Asian total (over/under) markets available for betting, so we will present the basics and cover the most popular sport of all – football. This way of betting is especially interesting when the probability of one side winning the match is significantly higher than the opponent’s. Let’s start by defining the Asian handicap.

What is Asian Handicap?

Asian handicap is a form of sports betting market that is very popular in Asia, as its name signifies. Also presented sometimes as Asian HCP, it gives a virtual handicap (disadvantage or advantage) to the opposing teams, thus eliminating the chance of a draw in the match. In terms of bookmaker’s offer, this is done by presenting a positive or negative goal (or points) handicap for each team in a match, depending on which participant is perceived as the favourite (negative) and which as the underdog (positive). These markets may seem complicated at first glance, but it is actually a simple betting market type.

Simply put, without the draw option, Asian handicaps present only 2 possible outcomes in a match: Team A or Team B win. In some special cases, your bet might be settled as a ‘push‘, which we will cover as well in the following examples.

3 Types of Asian Handicap

There are few types of Asian handicaps which we will explain in detail here:
  • Half goal (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, etc),
  • Whole goal (1.0, 2.0, etc),
  • Quarter goal (0.25, 0.75, etc).
As we previously mentioned, all of these can be presented as positive or negative values, and it will be easier to understand by reading the following detailed explanation and examples. We will present the AH betting options on bookmakers like PS3838 or Singbet.

Half Goal Asian Handicap betting -0.5 / 0.5

This market is equivalent to a “Win” selection in the standard ‘1×2’ betting (-0.5) for the favorite, and the “Double Chance: Draw or Win” selection (0.5) for the other team in the football match. Therefore, the underdog team is given a head start with a half goal, and the favorite team starts the game with identical disadvantage.

When betting on the team with AH -0.5, your team has to win the game for the bet to be a winning one. In any other case, you lose your money. If betting on the AH 0.5, you need your team to win or tie to win your bet. This helps us clarify what it exactly means that there is no draw option in this type of betting market, as we pointed out before.

Full Goal Asian Handicap betting -1.0 / 1.0

Here the game starts with -1 goal disadvantage for the favorite, meaning that a one goal virtual head-start is given to the underdog team.

When betting on AH -1.0, to win your coupon you need your team to win by 2 or more goals difference. If your team wins by 1 goal, you get your money back – no wager. If the game ends in a draw or the other team wins, you lose your entire stake.

To win your coupon when betting on Asian handicap +1.0, you need your team to win or draw. If your team loses by 1 goal, you get your money back – no wager or ‘push‘. However, if the other team wins by 2 or more goals, you lose your bet.

An interesting selection among the possible full Asian handicaps, is ‘Level ball‘ AH, also presented as 0.0 and in non-Asian bookies as ‘Draw No Bet’ (DNB) market. Let’s say you bet on a team to win on the AH 0.0 market – all that you need is your team to win, and you will win your coupon. If there is a draw, it’s a ‘push‘ – you get your stake refunded, but if your team loses the game, you lose your bet.
The table below explains the payout according to the match result.

Quarter Goal Asian Handicap betting -0.25 / 0.25

This AH type indicates that the underdog team is given a head-start with a “quarter goal”, so the game starts with -0.25 without any draw option. It’s not a separate or another type, but a combination of the two previously mentioned types. In simple terms, when betting on quarter goal AH like 0.75 or 1.25, your stake is divided between two handicaps that surround it.

If you bet on a team to cover (beat) the -0.25 virtual disadvantage, all that you need is your team to win, and you will win your coupon. If there is a draw, you lose half of your stake. If your team loses the game, you lose your bet.

If betting on the other side, 0.25, a draw will give you a half win; you win your bet if your team wins and lose your bet if your team loses.

What is Asian Total (Over / Under)?

The last type of football betting market we will cover here, that is very popular among bettors and may keep you interested in a football match right up to the dying minutes is an Over/Under bet. When you place such a bet you will have to predict correctly whether the total number of goals scored in a selected match will be over or under the betting market line (number) you have selected.

‘Total’ or ‘Over / Under’ markets can be of Asian or European type. Example of Asian Total lines are: 1.0, 1.25, 1.75, 2.0, 2.25, 2.75, 3.0, 3.25, etc.

The same principles we explained in relation to Asian handicaps, also apply to Asian Over/Under goal (points, cards, etc.) markets. Depending on the related match outcome, whether there was over or under a certain amount of goals, your bets will be settled as either as a win, loss, or a push, or when it comes to quarter-totals, it can be a combination of two outcomes: half-win or half-loss, and half of your stake back.

There are also prop Over/Under bets for corner, cards or other markets (depending on the sport) that a bookmaker would offer. Team and player statistics play a major role in the process of pricing this type of betting markets.

How to start betting on Asian handicaps?
