How to Place a Bet on Orbit

Orbit Exchange Review

Orbit is the go-to platform for people who are looking for flexibility and who don’t want to be limited in terms of features, markets and liquidity. Probably the first thing that should be said about the Orbit Exchange platform is that it is powered by Betfair, so if you are familiar with Betfair and the quality of service that they deliver, you will know what to expect from Orbit. This Orbit Exchange review will certainly help as well!

On the other hand, if you haven’t used a betting exchange before, you quickly realize that it offers many advantages compared to a conventional bookie. The Orbit Exchange was launched in 2017 and in the first five years it managed to establish itself not just as an alternative for those who have no access to Betfair, but also up and coming punters who are looking to become professionals.

The bottom line is – if you’re a punter in 2022 who is looking for a betting exchange that offers high liquidity with as few limitations as possible, you can get access to the Orbit Exchange via BetInAsia. You won’t need an Orbit Exchange app to access the betting platform.

Back and Lay Bets Explained

We will start this Orbit Exchange review by explaining two key concepts not just about Orbit, but also about betting exchanges in general – back and lay bets.  When betting through an exchange you are not placing a bet against the bookmaker but against another punter who is willing to accept a bet on the same event, on the same market but is convinced that the outcome will be opposite. Have a look at our video guide that you can find above, it is a full Orbit Exchange guide

We wouldn’t go into all the details of betting through an exchange here, but here are some of the basics. There are two options when you are placing a bet – ‘back’ and ‘lay’. Back is a bet on a particular option – for instance if you think that a particular horse will win a bet, you are placing a ‘back’ bet.

A ‘lay’ bet is betting that an outcome will not occur – so in the case of a horse race if a back bet is that a mare called ‘Green Widow’ will win, a lay bet would be that this mare will not win, i.e. you are betting on any other outcome.

So, with the lay bet you put yourself in the position of the bookmaker, so to speak, i.e. you are taking bets on a particular outcome and you’re getting the punter’s stake when that outcome doesn’t occur.

Available Sports at Orbit Exchange

We went through the basics of betting through an exchange, now let’s continue with this Orbit Exchange review, by going through the sports, events and betting markets available at Orbit

A wide range of sports are available on Orbit and you can place bets on a quite large number of events, national and international matches, games, races and fights, depending on your sport of choice.

The number of available sports exceeds 20, but bear in mind that this doesn’t mean that you will be able to place a bet on every sport that’s on offer and on every possible event – it has to be included and listed on the exchange and there has to be another punter who is willing to bet on the opposite outcome.

Commission - Orbit Exchange Review

We took you through the basics of the Orbit Exchange in terms of what is offered and what options are available to you. Now let’s have a look at the practical aspect and help you understand how the process of placing bets via Orbit Exchange works.

Let’s start with the commission. There’s a commission of 3% on all winning bets. There’s no commission or any additional fees on losing bets.

Let us assume a bet that has been placed at evens (2.0). In this case you and the other punter have wagered equal amounts and the winner would get as much as they wagered. So, if the two punters in this imagined bet placed 100 each, then the winner would get their stake back plus an additional 100. In this case, the commission would be charged on the additional 100 and so it would be 3.

So, the punter who lost the bet would lose only the amount agreed as per the bet, there is no commission on losing bets, and there is no commission on the returned stake when the bet is settled. With Orbit you only pay commission on the amount that you actually win.

How to Place a Back Bet on Orbit Xchange

Now that we have the commission out of the way, we can continue with the other aspects of the process, in particular – how to place a back bet.

We touched upon the difference between back and lay. Orbit Exchange offers a set of odds for the markets that are covered. Let’s assume the same bet from earlier – where there are two possible outcomes with equal probability.

The blue boxes represent the back options and the pink ones are the lays. If you are interested in a particular back bet, click the respective button and then you can choose how much you would like to stake and you will see the potential profit. In the case of a back bet, the liability is always equal to the stake amount, you can lose more than what you’ve wagered.

With a back bet, you need the given outcome to occur for you to win.

How to Place a Lay Bet on Orbit

Placing a lay bet is similar to placing a back bet. You just need to click on the box of the bet that you’d like to place, i.e. to lay and then select (or type in) the amount that you are willing to, in this case, risk.

These elements are given as – Backer’s odds, Backer’s stake and Your liability. Backer’s odds are the odds at which the other punter would be placing the back bet. Based on those odds and the backer’s stake your liability is calculated. The liability is the amount that you would need to pay the other punter if they win the bet.

Regardless whether we’re talking about a back bet or a lay bet, you need to click the ‘Place bets’ button for the bets to be placed. There is an option called ‘Confirm bets before placing’ which you should select if you wish to confirm the bets once again before they are placed. If you don’t tick that box all bets will be placed right away as soon as another punter accepts to either back or lay your bet.

Once you have placed a bet you will have a bet offer and when someone matches that offer, the bet is on. The bet doesn’t have to be matched in full, perhaps another punter would want to bet against you, but not the full amount as specified in your bet, only in part. If nobody matches your bet, it will be reported as an unmatched bet.

Can I Set my Own Odds?

The odds that are given by Orbit are a suggestion in terms of which odds are the most realistic ones for given selections, but if you are willing to take greater risk and are willing to lay a bet at higher odds than the ones suggested by Orbit, or perhaps you think that somebody else would be willing to match a bet with odds that are more favourable for you – you can set your own odds

You can either set the price, i.e. the odds that you are willing to take, but you can also specify the amount that you are willing to risk losing, or as it’s called here – liability. If you lay a bet at lower odds, you will be risking less should you lose the bet.

What Are Unmatched Bets?

We mentioned above that there are unmatched bets and they stay on the market as unmatched, and they will be open to interested punters until you cancel them. The offered prices and the amount change in real time, as the fluctuations occur.

If the odds offered by bookies change over time and your bet remains unmatched, perhaps you might want to change your odds as well if you want to get the bet matched. If your bet was matched in part, you will still have the option to adjust the odds only on the unmatched part in order to get it matched.

For bets that have been accepted and matched and the result will be known when the event is over and the bet is settled. If your bet remains unmatched, either in full or in part, you will get your stake back in the end. Check the ‘My Bets’ page if you wish to check the status of your bets. Click on the down arrow next to your balance to open the page.

What Is Cash Out and How It Works

The Cash Out option gives you an opportunity to minimise your losses or secure your profits even before the events are concluded and before your bet is effectively settled.

With the cash out option you can get paid before an event is concluded, i.e. before a bet is supposed to be settled. With one click you can cash out all your bets on a given market.

The cash out icon will be displayed on those bets for which cash out will be offered.

The value of the offered cash out is calculated in real time based on what odds are offered on the live markets. If the liquidity on a given market is low, cash out might be made unavailable. The cash out amount that is displayed where cash out is offered is the minimum amount that you would get if the cash out is successful.

Since the offered cash out is based on the value of the live markets, the price can change pretty quickly, and that’s why the cash out can be unsuccessful or only partially successful. On the other hand, you can also get more than it was originally indicated.

Whenever a cash out is unsuccessful, you will be offered a new cash out deal based on the updated prices offered by Betfair and in relation to your position.

If there is a reduction in the exposure on the market for which you got cash out it will be returned to your account after the cash out has been successful. If the cash out was partial and you make a profit on the market, it will be paid out once the event is over and the market is settled.
